Born in Robbiate, near Milan, Albini graduated in architecture from the Politecnico di Milano University in 1929 and began his professional career working for Gio Ponti.
He started showcasing his work at the Milan Triennial and in 1930 opened his own studio. Through his creations, modern furniture design seamlessly merged traditional Italian craftsmanship with the new forms of modernism, earning him recognition with three Compasso d'Oro awards, the most prestigious Italian design accolade.
Desk with map cabinet designed by Albini in 1962 for the Galleria Sistina, on Via di Brera, Milan.
A unique and very special piece, it features Albini's iconic handles, crafted in brass and Rosewood.
The drawers of the map cabinet are generously proportioned: they were designed to accommodate up to poster size (66 cm x 96 cm) and the top is covered in black leather.
The set of drawers on the right includes two open niches at the back of the desk, allowing for access to the rear.
Originally part of the collection owned by Arturo and Enrica Profili, Italian immigrants who opened an art gallery in São Paulo in the late 1950s.
Originally black, the desk was repainted with its current color by the previous owners.
