Tonico was a piece of furniture imagined to be popular. Like many designers of Rodrigues's generation, he dreamed of commercializing well-designed pieces produced in series. Thus, in 1962 "Meia-Pataca" factory-cum-store was launched, working concomitantly with Oca. The idea was to expand distribution and reduce production costs. It was not only to meet the needs of people with few financial possibilities but also to give simplicity and the maximum comfort possible with those drawings.
The industrial thought is visible on the structural solution, applying juxtaposed wooden pieces of a square or rectangular section and straight corners. Other furniture pieces like "Vronka" and "Franco" follow the same structural thought.
Sergio Rodrigues gave this name in honor of his brother-in-law Tonico because he fell in love with the chair, its aesthetic quality, and its comfort.
