Born in Warsaw, Poland, Jorge Zalszupin studied architecture at Bucharest University, Romania, and later immigrated to Brazil after World War II, in 1949. In 1953 he managed to become a Brazilian citizen, changing his name from Jerzy to Jorge, thus having his diploma recognized – guaranteeing the right to sign his own projects.

In 1953, he managed to become a Brazilian citizen, changing his name from Jerzy to Jorge. His diploma was recognized and he could finally sign his own projects. His work as an architect created a demand for decoration and furniture proposals that suited the style of his projects and, for many years, Zalszupin designed and executed them for his clients. The demand was as great as the desire to grow and expand his business, and he then decided to found L'atelier Móveis in November 1959.

"I can't live well with too much rigidity. The 90-degree angle, for example, is something I love, but I can't do it. The things I do end up being a little lyrical, a little sensual, in short, there is always an element that does not come from purity or cleanliness." - Jorge Zalszupin
