Liceu De Artes & Oficios was established in 1873 by a group of elite coffee aristocrats that pretended to train skilled labor for possible future industrialization of Brazil.
Seven years after, the institution changed completely the proposal, really becoming a school of craftsmanship, occupying a building design by Ramos de Azevedo and been directly also by him. The teaching models become to follow the European Arts & Crafts Schools and the institution focused on design, casting, lock-smithing, carpentry, and other fields.
During these golden years of production many sofas, armchairs, credenzas by many Brazilian young designers were manufactured and commercialized by Liceu de Artes e Oficios.
