Eero Saarinen (1910-1961) designed the Tulip chair in 1955 and 1956 for the Knoll company, based in New York City. The chairs are part of the Pedestal Collection, which Saarinen said: "The undercarriage of chairs and tables in a typical interior makes an ugly, confusing, unrestful world. I wanted to clear up the slum of legs. I wanted to make the chair all one thing again."
The name Tulip came from the organic inspiration from nature, and the collection is a mark of modern industrial design. The chair was designed primarily to match the complementary dining table.
The base of the tulip chair is made of cast aluminum with a coated finish to match the upper shell, made of fiberglass with a reinforced plastic bonded finish, giving the appearance of a single unit. The upholstered foam cushion is removable with Velcro fastening.
The Tulip Chairs were produced in Brazil by Forma S.A., licensed by Knoll International since 1960. The pieces are in original very good vintage condition.
